The Alpine ibex has a sturdy and stocky body with a length of up to 160 cm, an withers height of up to 1 m and a weight of up to 120 kg, females being almost twice as small. Males are also distinguished by their short beard and 70 to 140 cm long horns curving back and slightly to the side, with distinct transverse ribs on the front. These bumps mark the annual growth of the horns during the summer season, when they grow more vigorously. Females also have horns, but they are much smaller with weakly pronounced ribs.
