Technologies to help wildlife: A new important step for the Alpine ibex in the Kormisosh Wildlife Sanctuary

In January 2024, at the South Central State Enterprise – Smolyan, we launched an ambitious and long-term project to restore the Alpine ibex population in the Rhodope Mountains. With the introduction of the first specimens from Bavaria, our hunting farm has become the only place in our country that lays the foundations for the return of this majestic species that has disappeared from the region.

Today, this mission continues with full force in the field through the active implementation of modern scientific methods and modern technologies. The shared video shows the precise and responsible process of installing a GPS transmitter on a male Alpine ibex. This monitoring is of key importance, as it allows us to track the movement of the specimen in real time across the vast and free territories of the farm. Through the collected GPS data, our team will receive invaluable information about the animals’ migratory habits and their choice of routes. Our main goal is to capture the moment when the male ibex will be joined by females for the successful formation of a stable herd, followed by periods of mating and reproduction.

See footage of our specialists’ work in the heart of the mountain and how the combination of new technologies in the wild helps to build a more sustainable future for the wildlife of the Rhodope Mountains.
